Happy New Year to you all lovely people. I hope you had a good break and ready to take on 2021 whether you are lockdown of not. Although, I must say being in the earlier situation is not fun but its better safer than sorry.
Try giving up something to reap the good benefits of the save, give up that daily coffee? or that Friday fish and chips? the occasional luxury chocolate box or like some of us spend less on buying clothes you do not need?
So by the title of this blog, you are either thinking ‘how is it our business your husband stopped buying flowers?’ or ‘just get to the point where you save, make it snappy’. Alright, alright they all go hand in hand because without the flowers we would not be talking saving goals.

In 2019, my husband and I were having a chat with some family members where we started to talk about flowers. at some point I bluntly said “my husband does not buy me flower”. I confess, he did, he does, but here is the thing, it is very easy to forget flowers once they rot and thrown away in the bin. So my husband made a vow not to buy me flowers throughout 2020. Instead, he pledged to put away £10 every Friday of 2020 January to December. He went on to add another £10 to put away making a total of £20 a week. A bouquet of flowers from the local grocery store ranges between £10 and £15 I would say. I was to decide towards the end 2020 what the money would be used for. I thought, “that’s not so bad, I will probably get a designer handbag from these saving” it was a win win situation. And keeping the saving spirits high, I decided to pledge a weekly saving contribution of £10. Our weekly savings together totalled £30.

We put this money in piggy banks we bought from Poundland, these can also be bought from AMAZON. We printed out a table with 52 weeks of the year. Every Friday we put away £30 in the piggy bank, we ticked against each week until the last week of December 2020.
I am glad to say that we saved £1560. This is money that could have easily gone to flowers or just blown in the wind buying take away. I admit, our savings did not really have a clear goal other than to stop spending on flowers but in the end we saved 4 figures and we yet to decide what to do with it while it sits in the banks, maybe it will go towards a house deposit? a holiday? (if one ever happens with these lockdowns) we shall see.
So if you are planning on saving this year, I believe this could be a good way of putting money away for whatever goals you have. Depending on your income and how comfortable you are with money, the money you put away may vary from our weekly £30. Try to give up something to reap the good benefits of the save, give up that daily coffee? or that Friday fish and chips? the occasional luxury chocolate box ? or like some of us spend less on buying clothes you do not need this year?
You can save as little as £1 a day and have £365 by 31 December 2021. It does not necessary have to be from January, just give yourself a 12-month period. TIP – If you are planning on saving a lot more per day or per week, please consider opening a designated online savings account as you do not want to be keeping a lot of cash in your home.
I hope this inspires you to save something this year or the next 12 months from the time you read this post.
PS – Husband managed to squeeze in the very occasional flowers in 2020 :).
XOXO
